Dr GVS Murthy graduated from Guntur Medical College in 1979 and then went on to do a Masters in Community Medicine at AIIMS in 1985. He subsequently completed his Masters in Community Ophthalmology from University College, London in 1995 with a distinction.
Over the past 35 years, Dr Murthy has been a faculty at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, where he is Professor of Public Health Eye Care & Disability. He has also worked with WHO (Geneva) on Prevention of Childhood Blindness and UNAIDS (New Delhi) on Behavioral Surveillance and MIS. He also heads the South Asia Centre for Disability Inclusive Development & Research, a PHFI Centre for excellence established in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK.
He is an Advisor to CBM South Asia Region on Disability
He has been a Principal Investigator on 40 research projects funded by WHO, World Bank, DfID, CBM, Sightsavers, ICMR, Queens Diamond Jubilee Trust, OEU, US-India Fund, Welcome Trust and other agencies.
He has published more than 175 papers including 130 in leading peer-reviewed journals and contributed chapters to 12 books and edited 14 books/ monographs and presented more than 300 papers at national and international conferences. He is a member of editorial boards of 4 journals.
He has been the recipient of a number of awards including the ICMR Young Scientist Award (BC Srivastava Award), Dr G. Venkataswamy Award, National Society for Prevention of Blindness Award, Dr Rustam Ranji Oration and Award, the AIIMS Golden Jubilee Oration and GMC Diamond Jubilee Alumni Oration.
