Karen graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1989 and started her career as a high street optometrist, moving into practice management and regional training as well as pre-registration optometrist supervision. She became Professional Services Manager at Vision Express in 1998 looking after their national optometrist continuing education, graduate recruitment and pre-registration training programmes for over 9 years. She has also completed research placements at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London and the Kingston Royal Eye Unit, Surrey, UK.UK.
In 2008 she joined the Association of Optometrists (AOP) initially as Education Adviser and then as Head of Professional Development where she supported and mentored students and optometrists across the UK at all career stages. She designed and ran local and international continuing education conferences and became a media spokesperson on optometry, eye health and eye care, having appeared on the BBC, ITV, national and local radio and been quoted and written for national press and web media.
She has volunteered for NGO Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) since 2007, leading projects in Africa to provide training and sustainable eye care solutions in line with Vision2020. Her responsibilities include Education and Training Technical Adviser for Vision Aid Overseas and she supported installing a Vision Centre in Botswana as part of a Seeing is Believing programme with Addenbrooke’s Hospital Trust, Cambridge, UK; where she undertook the first survey of the optometry workforce in Botswana.
She has management and committee experience across public, private and not-for profit sectors and is active in the European Academy of Optometry and Optics, the American Academy of Optometry and the World Council of Optometry. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (2010), European Academy of Optometry (2011) and the College of Optometrists (2014), UK and a Liveryman of Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
Karen recently completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health for Eye Care at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and is now using her knowledge to improve eye care service delivery across the world as Training and Development Manager for Peek Vision.  This is a social impact start-up organisation which creates portable smartphone tools, technology, apps and systems to empower health workers around the world to help reduce avoidable blindness, especially in remote areas and low income countries.
