Pirindhavellie Govender is an optometrist working in the non-government sector. She started her career in the public sector optometrist in the Northern Cape. She then went on to join the staff at the University of Durban Westville (now University of KwaZulu Natal – UKZN) as a clinical resident. Having been exposed to the academic and research arena in this post, she went on to become a lecturer in the department of optometry and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the department. She has taught for almost 20 years with main subject areas being ‘Clinical Optometric Techniques’ ‘Diagnosis and Management of Ocular Disease’ and ‘Low Vision’. She has taught in several undergraduate and postgraduate courses locally and abroad and serves as an examiner for several national diagnostic programs conducted by various organisations in South Africa. Pirindha has served as an external examiner at the University of Free State’s Department of Optometry for several years.
Pirindha’ s research experience began with her involvement in the WHO/NEI funded Refractive Error Study in Children in Africa in 2002.  This experience spurred her on to get her Masters in Optometry in 2009.  Pirindha has presented and co-authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals locally and internationally.  Since she has joined the Brien Holden Vision Institute full-time since 2012 in her role as the Global Programmes Associate and she has contributed significantly to research and programmatic areas within the organisation as well as to the Global Optometry Resource Platform.  Professionally supporting the CEO of the Institute, Prof Kovin Naidoo, on programmatic and research areas, Pirindha has been an invaluable member of the global team.

The scientific committee is working diligently to review the abstract submission. We intend to inform you of the outcomes by end of May 2017.
